Why children bond with soft toys

(and why it matters)

There's something about a soft toy that becomes more than just a toy.

They become a companion on long car rides, a comfort in the middle of the night, a familiar face in new situations or the guest of honor at a tea party.

Long before they have the words to explain big feelings, children find comfort in something they can hold.

And often that something is a soft, well-loved friend.

The comfort of something familiar

It may not be something that you notice straight away.

It could be you start to notice the same toy chosen every night, or the one that comes on every outing, or the one that's reached for when a cuddle is needed, bringing comfort and safety.

This is what's often called a comfort object, something that helps children regulate emotions and feel secure.

Paediatricians and psychologists often refer to them as transitional objects, helping children deal with moments of separation, from saying goodnight at bedtime to the first day of kindergarten.

Over time, these soft companions become part of a child's story. As adults we may still have our favourite cuddly toy that went everywhere with us as a child, the chosen one may be missing an eye or arm and sits in a box of our childhood treasures.

A steady kind of comfort

These well-loved companions often become part of everyday life in small, meaningful ways:

helping children relax and drift off to sleep
offering comfort during change
becoming a friend to talk to and hold (or read books with on a rainy day!)

Not every child chooses a forever friend, but many do.

And when they do, they become part of the family... (with some even ending up in university dorm rooms after leaving home!)

Not every toy becomes that toy.

The ones that do tend to have something special:

soft, comforting textures
warm, familiar features
a personality of their own

They're the ones that are held onto, carried everywhere...
and remembered long after childhood has passed.
